Nancy Hixt is an award-winning senior crime reporter for Global News.  She has been reporting for nearly 30 years, covering crime specifically since 1997.

Her broadcast career began at Global’s sister station in Red Deer (the former RDTV) before she took over the crime beat at Global Calgary.

Nancy has a passion for telling stories others might be reluctant to tell, taking audiences inside some of the most high-profile cases she’s worked on and giving a voice to people who may not otherwise be heard.

Launched in February of 2019, the popular podcast, Crime Beat, has led the Apple Podcast True Crime chart every season and has more than 19 million downloads and streams to date.  Based on the popularity of the show, two TV adaptations have been created for Global News – Crime Beat and Crime Beat Most Wanted. Regularly cited by criminal justice educators, Crime Beat has established itself as one of the top investigative crime podcasts in North America and continues to shine a light in dark places and give voice to voiceless victims.       

As host, writer, and co-creator of the award-winning Crime Beat podcast, Nancy has received multiple prestigious awards including a 2023 RTDNA Edward R. Murrow for her Crime Beat podcast, Stolen Innocence – a story Nancy has worked on for more than 20 years – uncovering unexpected twists and leading to an emotional conclusion; a 2022 RTDNA Prairie Regional Award for Best Podcast for the Crime Beat episode “Violated Care: Patients of a Disgraced Doctor Speak Out;” and in 2020, a RTDNA Edward R. Murrow for Best International Podcast for her Crime Beat podcast series “Kelly Cook: The Back-up babysitter.” In these episodes, Nancy took listeners through the unsolved kidnapping and murder of a 15-year-old girl in 1981 and shared never-before-reported details of the case and an interview with the killer’s original target.

Nancy has also received awards for her reporting for Global News including a 2018 regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow television award in the large-market category for her News Series, Unconventional Comfort.; and a Canadian Screen Award for Best Reportage in the local category and the RTDNA Ron Laidlaw Award for continuing coverage for her series on the shocking abuse some taxi drivers face from passengers.

In 2012 Nancy was honoured by the Alberta Solicitor General with a Crime Prevention Award for her work series on home break-ins. She toured Calgary communities with a serial burglar who was allowed out of prison for a day to offer insight into how to protect your home.
